a new post

When I’m not doing research into International Climate Policy or reading for my PhD in the same, I run a few micro-blogs.

So for my own ease I have grouped them all on this site.
I haven’t decided what else to do with this site – let’s just call it an ‘emergent space’ and leave it at that.

Rainy days in London

I passed through London on my way to Oxford from Bournemouth.

I took some pictures from inside the

Planet under Pressure 2012

PhD researchers, Jesse Burton and Kim Coetzee, from the Energy Research Centre, are attending the Planet under Pressure 2012 in London, UK.

Jesse & Kim are at the conference to present and discuss their poster on the role of the Minerals-Energy Complex in the political econony of South Africa and how this interacts with climate change policy. Their works falls under the ‘changing paradigms’ theme of the conference.

So far there have been speeches by  scientists and global change thinkers like Nobel Laureate Elino Ostrom, Economist Richard Norgaard, Acheim Steiner (UNEP), Oran Young, Johan Rockström, Karin Backstrand, NYT columnist Andrew Revkin as well as chief scientic advisors to several governments. The Conference is billed as a run-up to the Rio+20 conference later this year and is exploring new knowledge towards solutions at the nexus of science and policy.

Deja view in Chiswick

How little things seem to change in Chiswick, London. True, restaurants come and go, shops open and close, but here I am, 5 years after I left, sitting in my favourite seat in my favourite café and the view is largely unchanged.

Hmmmm…

Moving left from the white building on the corner that houses Café Nero, the first unpainted brick house is my old spot on the high road. My home for four years.

Night cycle through Paris

Last night I took a night bike tour of Paris with the “Fat Tyre Bike Tour” company. What a rush! Cycling at night through the city is an adrenalin rush & a new way to experience french drivers!

The (back of the) Notre Dame cathedral all lit up.

We cycled cheekily through the grounds of the Louvre.

We took a trip on the boat the bateaux-mouches, had some red wine and then cycled back to the office to drop off the bikes. Wine definitely provided some ‘courage’ on that leg!

Undoubtedly a highlight of my trip so far.

East Side Gallery

I attended a workshop in Berlin in October 2011 & stayed on a few days to do a bit of sightseeing as Berlin is one of my favourite cities.

I took a themed bicycle tour – Cold War & the Wall – led by Alex (I think) of the Fat Tyre Bicycle Tours company. I found the tour both informative & enjoyable.

The one on the far right is one of the most famous images from the Berlin Wall; that of Brezhnev & Honecker locking lips! Naturally this isn’t the original and it had been repainted even since I first saw it in 2000.

The first two are smaller details in much larger panels.

In my previous life…

I was a full-time web-designer for Elior UK & part-time student living in London, UK.
I still enjoy the creative outlet web design affords me, but don’t get much chance to start from scratch any more (now, like web 2.0, I’m all about the content, dahling!).

Here is a list of current and old websites I designed and implemented.

PhD portal

Just for fun I started a blog for PhD researchers (from any faculty) as an attempt to create a virtual meeting-place for all UCT PhD researchers. I haven’t done much with it so far.

E2C2 blog

My PhD research is done under the guidance of my supervisor, Prof. Harald Winkler at the Energy Research Centre at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Harald heads up the Energy, Environment and Climate Change (E2C2) group which is one of four research groups within the Energy Research Centre. Every year E2C2 tries to send some researchers to the UNFCCC’s COP/CMP and whilst there they blog about their experiences. This year, 2011, we’ve also been posting about SA’s emerging Climate Policies as the ERC contributed to public comment of the Climate Change Response Green Paper.
